Beer starts it’s life as a mixture of water, sugar and yeast (and hops). After primary fermentation the beer is typically transferred to a secondary fermentor. Most people don’t see beer during the fermentation phase. Yes, the end product is great but fermentation tends to be nasty, so behold, beer’s nasty little secret – in pictures!
1. The birth of beer! This is the beer (wort) boiling after adding all ingredients. Doesn’t it look delicious? It tends to look green depending on the hops that are in the mixture.

2. This is a picture of the “sludge” (mostly dormant yeast) on the bottom of the primary fermentor. Notice the dried brown crusty stuff on the left top rim of the bucket. Nasty.

3. This picture shows all the remaining dormant yeast. There’s a better view of the brown nastiness, still not sure what that was.

I came up with the idea for this post when I was looking at some old “brewing pictures” and figured that I’d share them with everyone. The last three beers that I made were a Winter Spice Ale, an Oktoberfest and a Pale Ale. Over the weekend I brewed up a batch Raspberry Wheat Beer. During primary fermentation of the latest batch the beer started to foam out of the airlock. I have some pictures of that as well but I need get them off my camera and onto my computer.

Mmmmmmmmmm….beeeeeerrrr. It may look nasty but it does taste great in the end. I love how it starts out as a green puke color. Yummy!
